Carolyne wears many hats in her community. She is a physical therapist with advanced degrees in physiology and business administration, as well as the president of her local Lions Club. She serves as a commissioner on a Veterans Affairs advisory council and helps train service dogs for public access, working with the legislation for people with disabilities to live with the aid of a service dog.
Carolyne also does acute care at the fitness center, along with her other activities. Not to mention, she is a local elected official of her hometown and helps constituents with anything they need. She and her colleagues vote on budgets, road repairs, police and fire contracts, and other civil responsibilities. She’s a busy lady, to say the least!
“I’m a community advocate for everyone,” says Carolyne, “with whatever the condition is—whatever the problem is, whether it’s helping somebody, organizing food drives, school drives, or helping veterans find housing and clothes. I will do it all, and I do it all through my practice and through my individual lifestyle.”
Lending a Helping Hand Whenever She Can
Carolyne tries to help out whenever she can, so it’s important for her to stay physically active. She is sometimes joined by her friend, Jen, in doing good for the community, like putting flags on graves for Memorial Day.
“Local, state, federal, whoever needs it,” Carolyne explains. “The town calls me up and says, ‘We have a problem,’ and I never say no. If I say yes, you could set your clock by my yes. And no matter what, it won’t turn back. I won’t turn away from any ask because I can if I can. If I can’t—like, I’m not going to go scuba diving; I can’t—so I won’t do unrealistic or dangerous things. But if you need something, like help with anything, connections, or if I can physically do it, I’m there for you.”
Getting in the Trenches, Working With Patients
Carolyne says she is like an official in her hometown. “I work on not only legislation with the vote, but I meet constituents, I find out what their concerns may be, and I’ll get in the trenches with them and help them.”
When she isn’t serving in this role, Carolyne runs her private practice. Carolyne has had a physician’s physical therapy practice for about 35 years.
Carolyne says she was once involved in orthopedics, pediatrics, and geriatrics, but settled on sports rehabilitation and sports medicine to help people deal with various injuries.
“Whether it’s a fracture, break, soft tissue, burn injury, whatever it is that comes my way, we evaluate, treat, and, as you can see by the equipment here, we are intensely active. I want you to feel as good as I feel every day I wake up. I want you to love the energy level you get. I want you to feel that your whole body works in coordination with it. And if I don’t feel good, I can’t help you feel good,” Carolyne explains.
A typical day for Carolyne starts early and is jam-packed.
She opens her practice sometime before 5 a.m. She will squeeze in a workout of her own before greeting patients. Then, she’ll work with patients and train service dogs. Carolyne also serves as a senior advocate, helping senior citizens with anything they need.

Carolyne says it motivates her and makes her feel good when a patient comes in after their treatments.
She shares, “Whether they’re swinging, skipping, smiling with no pain or injury, they come in just to work out. It warms my heart, and I tell them I’m so honored. I’m honored that you trust enough in us that you come in here to continue your care. And I’ll tell you, ‘I never want to see you in that place again.’ And of course, they know what I mean. I don’t want to see you injured again. I want you to keep up your quality of life where you’re in control of your body. You can do it on your own. You don’t need me to put you back together, but I’m welcoming you through my doors. But in this capacity, you’re coming in willingly, not dragging yourself in because you need acute care, and that motivates me every day.”
Carolyne says they treat the whole patient—not just one body part. “We’re treating the entire body. It has to work together.”
She says you don’t only need to have the muscles working, but you also have to have good nutrients.
“You have to have a balance of your body and your nutrition. It’s critical,” Carolyne says. “If they’re dragging themselves in here, I know that they haven’t had a good meal of the day. They’re lacking in something, and they’re lacking in a balance between their body and their nutrition. And that’s important to get them through the day.”
Your Diet Is Critical
Carolyne stresses the importance of eating well. “There is nothing that can substitute fruits and vegetables in your diet. You need it. Don’t stop eating. You need it.”
Carolyne ate a lot of fruits and vegetables when she was younger, but says it got harder to digest and eat as much as she needs.

I feel you can inspire people with health and fitness just by example.”
Carolyne says her goal is to prevent injury and achieve a better quality of life.“I really believe with good eating, healthy diet, great exercise, you can have this. I don’t really believe that—I know it. I know it. I’ve seen it with different people. I know it through myself, and I’m not going to lie. I’ve had my share of incidents along the line, but they don’t slow me down. I’m not going to allow that to slow me down, and nobody has to. You just eat right.”
Carolyne says when patients walk in, she has to exude confidence. “I feel good, and I let them know through my example of how we’re going to get it done. We’re going to get you better, and you’re going to feel great, and you’re on your way back to a healthy condition.”
