Mark is in his seventies and knows he doesn’t look it! He’s a ranch manager for his family’s business, running operations, and looking after the horses.
“Don’t let the gray hair fool you,” he jokes. “That’s just color. I’m the ranch manager here. Some of my daily things are to take care of the horses—we have about twenty horses here on site. I make sure they all get fed, groomed, and so forth every day. Most of them get a bath every day, they’re exercised, and then we’re off to the horse show or whatever venue we’re headed for.”
Their ranch also has a registered longhorn herd that Mark watches over. “I make sure that they’re doing what they’re supposed to do, which is pretty much be a yard ornament, but that’s fine. They’re really fun to look at and be around.”
Ranching Is in His Blood
Working on the ranch is Mark’s livelihood. He loves working at the ranch and plans to do it for the rest of his life.
Mark’s daughter Amanda heads the family’s ranch business while he takes care of the livestock and general ranch operation. “The other operations that are here are totally separate from myself,” Mark explains. “Quarter horses are one of the mainstays of what we do here. We have some very, very high-grade quarter horses, and we compete at a high level.”
Amanda and his son-in-law, Matt, have competed since they were young, and both have won titles.
“The horse show is a big, big part of what we do. We breed, raise, and train American quarter horses. Some of the horses you see in this barn have won numerous titles in their particular venue, and we tend to focus more on the cattle classes, meaning that we work cattle in an arena and it’s being judged,” Mark shares.
His three grandchildren also live on the ranch with them. “At 75 years old, I feel great. I love what I’m doing. I love being around my family, particularly the grandkids.”
