Is a Tomato a Fruit? Balance of Nature Sides with Science!

The never-ending debate: Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? The answer isn’t as complicated as some make it seem.

Scientifically speaking, fruits develop from the flowering part of a plant and contain seeds, which makes tomatoes fit the definition perfectly; just like apples, oranges, and cherries. Balance of Nature sides with science, which is why we put ingredients from tomatoes in our Fruits supplement and not our Veggies supplement.

But why is there so much confusion surrounding the subject? Why do some people keep insisting that tomatoes are vegetables? To understand where they’re coming from, we’ll need to make a short visit to the kitchen and the Supreme Court.

In the Kitchen

When cooking, tomatoes are normally treated as vegetables. They’re cooked into savory dishes and added to salads. That’s why chefs and home cooks normally classify them as vegetables.

U.S. History of Tomatoes

Due to tariffs from other countries in 1893, imported vegetables were taxed but fruits were not. You can probably see where this is going; the U.S. Supreme Court essentially ruled tomatoes as vegetables despite what science says

Many across the globe are still confused on what ought to be a simple fact: tomatoes are fruits; just ask science.
