Fiber: You’d Have to Eat HOW Many Apples?!

Author: Kassie Demetropoulos

I’ll be honest—I always thought I was getting enough fiber. I mean, I eat fruit, I buy whole wheat bread, and I throw spinach into stuff sometimes. But when I actually looked into what the daily recommendations are, it turns out I wasn’t even close.

Many health experts recommend aiming for around 25–40 grams of fiber a day, depending on your age and gender. Sounds doable, right?

Well, here’s the thing: Most Americans don’t get nearly enough fiber—many fall far short of the recommended daily amount.

That means most of us are missing the mark by quite a bit. So, I got curious and started doing the math. And wow, it really puts things into perspective.

Let’s say you’re aiming for 25 grams of fiber a day. According to the USDA, here’s what that might look like if you were only eating one type of food to reach that goal:

  • 5.55 apples: each medium-sized apple has about 4.5 grams of fiber

  • 5 cups of broccoli: 5 grams of fiber per cup

  • 12.5 slices of whole wheat bread: 2 grams of fiber per slice

  • 8.3 bananas each medium-sized one has about 3 grams of fiber

And that’s just to get the minimum recommended amount!

That’s a lot of food.

Of course, no one’s diet consists of only apples or only bread—please don’t try that—but that’s exactly my point. We like to think, “I had a piece of fruit today. I’m good.” But when you actually do the math, you start to see just how far off we might be.

For me, it was a total wake-up call. Fiber doesn’t just sneak into our diet by accident. It has to be added with some real intention.

Now, I personally try to spread it out more: maybe some berries for breakfast, beans in my salad for lunch, or roasted vegetables with my dinner. It’s not about perfection; it’s about making progress. If we’re intentional about adding fibrous foods to our meals throughout the day, then by the end of it we might just hit the mark.

Because yes, fiber adds up. But only if we’re intentional about it.
