Can You Freeze Fresh Spices?

Fresh spices can be a great addition to your kitchen, but knowing how to store them is key. Many fresh spices can be preserved for a long time by drying and storing them in airtight containers. Some spices are often used fresh and can benefit from freezing. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide which spices to freeze and which to keep dry.

Allspice

You can freeze allspice by putting the berries in a freezer-safe airtight container or bag. Allspice can also be stored in an airtight container at room temperature in a dark, dry place.

Cardamom

Freezing cardamom might slightly reduce its flavor, but it can extend its shelf life. Once again, the preferred method for storing this spice is in an airtight container at room temperature in a dark, dry place.

Cinnamon

There is no need to freeze this dry spice. It stays fresh for a long time at room temperature in an airtight container.

Clove

Cloves are dried flowers and keep well in an airtight container at room temperature. Freezing is not needed.

Coriander

To freeze coriander leaves, also known as cilatro, chop and mix them with olive oil. Pour your mixture into an ice cube tray, freeze, and transfer the ice cubes to a freezer-safe container or bag. Note that coriander seeds are dried and do not need to be frozen.

Cumin

Similar to cilantro, you can freeze chopped cumin mixed with olive oil in ice cube trays. Note that cumin seeds can be stored at room temperature.

Fennel Seed

Store fennel seeds in an airtight container in your pantry. Freezing is not necessary.

Fenugreek

Like other seed spices, fenugreek doesn’t need freezing; simply store it in an airtight container at room temperature.

Ginger

You can freeze fresh ginger in an airtight container or bag. In fact, many find ginger easier to grate when frozen—just be sure to wash it first.

Mustard Seed

Store mustard seeds in an airtight container at room temperature. They don’t require freezing.

Nutmeg

Continuing with the theme, nutmeg is another seed that doesn’t require freezing, as it naturally dries out during its harvesting stage.

Turmeric

Freeze fresh turmeric by washing it in cold water, chopping it into small pieces, and placing in a freezer-safe container or bag.
