That KEVIN Show Guest Special: Dr. Douglas Howard and the Natural Chemistry of Fruits and Vegetables

Founder of Balance of Nature returns to the show for Kevin McCullough’s Wellness Wednesday

On a recent installment of That KEVIN Show, host Kevin McCullough welcomed back an old friend and respected figure in nutritional science: *Dr. Douglas Howard. The interview took place as part of McCullough’s regular “Wellness Wednesday” segment, a time he uses to push aside the noise of the news cycle and focus instead on what he describes as “something that’s going to help everyone who’s listening.” In this case, it was a powerful reminder of how nutrition and natural health go hand in hand.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Howard emphasized the importance of understanding the human body as a “chemical laboratory.” Every bodily function, he explained, relies on chemical reactions, which in turn require the right reactants—something that fruits, vegetables, spices, and fibers naturally provide. “If you don’t give it the right stuff,” he said, “It’s going to try to make it from other things. But how much more work does that take for your body?”

The discussion also explored the origins and philosophy behind the Balance of Nature product line. Dr. Howard spent years researching fruits and vegetables. “There are tens of thousands of chemicals—naturally occurring chemicals—in every fruit and vegetable,” he explained. “There's hundreds of thousands, and they make up the color and the taste and the smell.”

Equally important is the method of preparation. Dr. Howard notes the importance of a tailored vacuum-cold process that stabilizes the ingredients. “We use a freeze-drying process so that we retain as much of all of that chemistry as possible,” he said. “It is done in a dark, vacuumed, cold process.”

Kevin and Dr. Howard also touched on the spiritual and emotional dimensions of health. For Dr. Howard, health is not just chemical and physical, but also spiritual. “Mental, emotional, all that fits into spiritual for me,” he said. He teaches a concept he calls the “The Triad of Health,” which involves balancing all three aspects—Chemical, Physical, and Spiritual—to achieve your personal lifestyle goals.

Despite their long hiatus, McCullough and Dr. Howard were clearly energized to be back in conversation. “I am just really excited to be back,” said Dr. Howard, “And I sure respect everything you’ve grown to become.” He ended with a final note on the simplicity and truth of nutrition: “Fruits and vegetables have the proper chemistry” and should be part of a healthy lifestyle.
