Success Story: Nancy B. Goes Above and Beyond in Her Love of Learning

“The idea of being able to get ingredients of real food, seconds before you head out the door, that’s a great thing.”

As a global history teacher at a private Christian school in New York, Nancy is passionate about her field of expertise. Traveling to foreign countries with teenagers helps them understand cultures outside of their own, develop a heart for others, and become citizens of the world instead of just their town, she explains.

“It just takes a caring heart, a willing hand, a strong back, and a clear mind to be able to help others,” Balance of Nature customer Nancy B. says about teaching.

Passionate About Teaching, History, and Theater

Whether she’s leading student performers across the globe or diving into new traditions herself, Nancy turns education into an unforgettable adventure. Her next stop? An orphanage in Kenya, where her team will perform, serve, and grow—together.

“We all have a tendency to be selfish. I would like to see my students grow past that so that they are not just useful members of society, but leaders of society with a passion for others, with a heart for people who have less than, a heart for people who can be helped with not that much effort,” she says. “That’s always been my heartbeat, and I found a home here where I would be able to answer the need for this school to have an outgoing missions team. I hope to be able to do it for the rest of my life.”

Nancy grew up performing in theater; her first role was in Cowboy on the Moon when she was 5 years old. Theatrical makeup, costume design, directing, choreographing, writing—she did it all! “I got bit bad by the theater bug,” she shares. However, it wasn’t for her anymore when she reached her early twenties. It wasn’t until she was in her forties that she realized why she had been trained to do all those things. Now, she uses her theater skills when taking teams abroad to entertain, teach, help, and build up communities.

She says it’s hard work but very rewarding. The students do a lot of work where they put themselves second and inevitably undergo a change through the experience, she explains. “For me, the reward is watching them grow.”

As a teacher, Nancy’s students call her “Miss B” or “Mama B.” She says she especially loves teaching teenagers because she has a chance to “speak into their lives” and help them grow and mature before they go out into the world.

Her Labor of Love and Other Passions

An additional passion of Nancy’s is cooking. Along her journey, Nancy became a vegetarian and especially loves cooking vegetables.

“There’s no substitute for good food, for real food. There’s no substitute for whole food,” she says. “Unfortunately, we’re busy. I love cooking with vegetables.”

Although all of this is a “labor of love,” Nancy explains that it maintains her health.

Her Journey to Take Better Care of Herself

Nancy says she has to eat right, exercise, and stay aware of her body’s needs. She has been traveling with teens for 25 years and says it is demanding.

“This crazy team of teenagers and myself will be going to Nairobi and Kenjabi, Kenya,” she says. “We are going to be dancing, clowning, performing, acting, building, serving in any way we know how. I’ve been in the mission field for 25 years. It takes tons of energy, and it takes the will to keep pushing through even when you’re tired and it’s hot. If anything falls apart, I’m the glue that holds it together—it’s nonstop. We only have one shot at this, so your A game is always necessary; you can never not be on your A game.”

It was over seven years ago when Nancy began taking her health seriously. She wanted to lose weight to help her with dancing. She had changed her diet and exercise habits, but she knew she could do better than that.

“We were out of Balance of Nature supplements for about a week, and I said, ‘Okay, I am never doing that again.’” She decided then that she would be taking Balance of Nature supplements forever.
