How Brenda Maintains a Healthy Lifestyle
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, Brenda says she tries to get a lot of sleep and keep a routine.
“I try to eat at the same time every day,” shares Brenda. “I go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. I think routine is important to your body. I walk all the time and I’m always on my feet, cooking and things. So I’m fairly active for a person my age.”
She wants to stay healthy to be there for her grandkids, to feel good, and to live a long time like her 93-year-old father whom she takes care of. “I did a lot of cooking in the last four years, cooking for him and just cooking all kinds of vegetables—he loves vegetables,” she shares.
Fresh from the Garden: Brenda P.’s Cooking Story
Brenda says she has been cooking a long time. “I’ve been married over 42 years, so I’ve done a lot of cooking and I’ve just learned to love it,” she explains. “I like to can, and freeze, and preserve food from our garden.”
Cooking her own food gives her peace of mind as well. “I like to cook my own food because I know how it was handled, what’s in it. We just like home-cooked food and knowing the ingredients, knowing how it was handled, properly, kept at the right temperature—I like that. I think we feel better, we’re healthier if I cook the food: good, hearty food,” she adds.
Her mother and her aunts taught her a lot of what she knows. “My mother’s family would raise gardens and preserve food, freeze it, can it, dry it—sometimes you do dried food like apples and things like that. So it kind of comes down through the family,” Brenda explains.
Although Brenda doesn’t garden as much as her husband does, she enjoys helping.
“He does the physical work of hoeing and plowing, tying up tomatoes and things like that, but I’m more on the preserving side. He brings it in and then I take over and can the tomatoes and freeze the squash and peas and make homemade salsa, things like that,” she explains.
Their garden is natural and free of fertilizers and pesticides, which she likes. “There’s just nothing like the taste of freshly grown vegetables in the garden,” she describes. “You can’t match it. In my home, grown tomatoes that I can make into spaghetti, chili, or soup taste unbelievably so much better than what you buy at the store—the salsa—it just tastes better and it’s better for you.”
