Utah’s professional hockey story stretches back more than half a century. The journey began in 1969 when the Salt Lake Golden Eagles were the first to take the ice in Salt Lake City as a minor-league hockey team. This legacy was followed up in 1995 when the Utah Grizzlies arrived from Denver. In their first season, the Grizzlies captured the Turner Cup and set an all-time attendance record for a minor-league hockey game with 17,381 spectators. In the years that followed, however, the state’s once-vibrant hockey tradition slipped into the background.
